DANVILLE, Ky. (Feb. 4, 2012) – After taking a
lead on its opening possession, the Sewanee men's basketball team
would not lead again, as the Tigers fell at Centre, 68-53, Saturday
inside Alumni Gymnasium.
With the loss, the Tigers are now 11-9 overall and 5-7 in SCAC
play. Meanwhile, Centre improved to 14-6 overall and now sits with
an 8-4 conference record.
After junior forward Tyler Brown gave Sewanee a 2-0
advantage, Centre scored nine straight points. The Tigers pulled to
within four, 9-5, when junior Lewis Affronti hit his
first three-pointer.
Later in the half, Centre was up eight, 21-13, after Greg Ross
connected on back-to-back jumpers. The Tigers would eventually
close the gap to one, 23-22, when sophomore Valentino Bryant's
three capped off a 9-2 run.
Unfortunately, that would be as close as Sewanee got. After taking
a nine-point advantage into the half, the Colonels slowly pulled
away late.
The Tigers finished the afternoon 19-of-46 (41.3 percent). Sewanee
outrebounded the Colonels by two (32-30), however 13 Tiger
turnovers led to 14 Centre points.
Bryant led Sewanee with 16 points and seven rebounds. Affronti was
the only other Tiger to finish in double figures with 10 points on
4-of-6 shooting.
Guard Collin Lopez led Centre with 16 points while forward Donovan
Whiteside came off the bench and scored 13. SCAC leading scorer
Greg Ross added 11 points, six below his season average of 17.1
ppg.
The Tigers return to action with a 7:00 p.m. contest Monday
against Georgia Northwestern, inside Juhan Gymnasium.
