SEWANEE, Tenn. 2/19/12 – The Sewanee Tigers rode a pair of strong mound performances by veteran pitchers
Jacob Simpson and
Lee Schurlknight to sweep a doubleheader from visiting Johnson University on Saturday afternoon at a wind-swept Montgomery Field. The Tigers took Game 1 by the score of 15-2 and completed the sweep with an 8-0 shutout in the nightcap.
Sewanee begins the season at 2-0.
Simpson pitched five scoreless innings, allowed no hits, struck out eight and walked only two batters to pick up the win in the first game. Schurlknight, the winner in Game 2, gave up no runs on no hits, struck out 13 and allowed three walks in five innings of work.
In the first game the Tigers pounded out 16 hits. Sewanee was led by freshman
Grant Goodson with a perfect 3-for-3 effort at the plate, including a double, and an RBI.
Ryne Sullivan chipped in a double and two singles while driving in two runs.
Jack Rogers and
Allen Thigpen each contributed two hits and two RBI.
Scott Ward and
Wilson Nealy paced the Tigers nine-hit attack in the second game of the twin bill. Ward had two hits and four RBI and Neeley added two hits and one RBI.
The Tigers will return to action next weekend when they travel to Louisville, Ky. for a three-game set with Spalding University. Sewanee and Spalding will square off in a doubleheader on Saturday and a single game is scheduled for Sunday.
