ATLANTA (Feb. 10, 2012) – Hampered by 15 turnovers and a 37 percent shooting percentage, the Sewanee men's basketball team dropped a 69-49 contest at Oglethorpe, Friday, inside Dorough Field House in Atlanta, Georgia.
With the loss, Sewanee fell to 11-10 overall and 5-8 in SCAC play.
After the Tigers took a quick 2-0 lead, Oglethorpe fought back. The Stormy Petrels immediately took their first lead, a possession later, on a three by Brandon Jovaag. Oglethorpe then extended their lead to an 11-point advantage by halftime.
As second half action got underway, junior
Tyler Brown scored back-to-back field goals, which cut into the Oglethorpe lead. The Stormy Petrels still led, 42-29, before
Brett Bouldin pulled Sewanee closer with a three. Moments later, Bouldin was at it again. The junior guard's second three capped off an 11-2 run which pulled the Tigers to four, 42-38, with 10:54 remaining.
After an Oglethorpe 30-second timeout, the Stormy Petrels regrouped. Andrew Steioff put Oglethorpe up six, 46-40, on consecutive layups. Sewanee would get as close as two, 46-44, when Brown tipped in a
Valentino Bryant miss. Unfortunately, things started to unravel from there. The Stormy Petrels took control for good, after they closed the game on a 23-5 run.
Uncharacteristically, the Sewanee defense allowed its most points since a 79-47 loss at Austin College, January 28.
Brown led Sewanee with 11 points and seven rebounds. Bouldin added nine points while Bryant was limited to eight after hitting only 4-of-11 attempts.
Steioff led Oglethorpe with a game-high 21 points. Additionally, the Stormy Petrels had balanced scoring from three other players who finished with more than 10 points.
The Tigers return to action with a 3:00 p.m. (CST) contest Sunday at league-leading Birmingham-Southern.
