Box Score SEWANEE, Tenn. (Dec. 8, 2012) – The Sewanee men's basketball team closed out the 2012 Lon Varnell Classic with a 78-56 win over Toccoa Falls, Saturday, inside Juhan Gymnasium.
With a perfect 2-0 record during the two-day event, senior Brett Bouldin (MVP) and junior Valentino Bryant earned all-classic individual honors. Additionally, with its competition for the fall semester finished, Sewanee will head into the holiday break with a 5-2 overall record.
Early on, both teams kept the game close. With the score 13-9 in favor of the Tigers, Sewanee slowly started to pull away with a 15-7 run to end the first half.
In the second half, Sewanee opened play with a layup by senior Tyler Brown. After each team traded shots over the next three minutes, the Tigers' offense picked up.
Sewanee capped off a 12-6 run when senior Lewis Affronti and sophomore Robert Veal hit consecutive layups with 15:11 left.
From there, Sewanee stayed strong. Toccoa Falls only got to within 17 points the rest of the game.
Overall, the Tigers shot 52.9 percent from the floor. Additionally, Sewanee forced 18 turnovers and limited Toccoa Falls to only 12 second-chance points.
Individually, Bouldin led the Tigers with a team-high 10 points. Freshman Keshonn Carter, Bryant, freshman Will Downey, and freshman Seth Brown each added eight points.
Forward Derek Westfall led Toccoa Falls with a game-high 20 points.
Sewanee will now take some time off for the holiday break. The Tigers will return to action after the New Year with an 8:00 p.m., contest at Southern Athletic Association (SAA) rival Birmingham-Southern, January 4th.
