Box Score LOOKOUT MTN, Ga. (Dec. 4, 2012) – Despite outscoring regional-rival Covenant by three points in the second half, the Sewanee men's basketball team fell just short against the Scots, 50-47, Tuesday inside the Barnes PE Center.
Down by six, 27-21, to start the second half, the Tigers (3-2) quickly cut into their deficit. A jumper by Keshonn Carter and a three by Brett Bouldin pulled Sewanee to within one, 27-26, with less than two minutes off the clock.
Minutes later, the Tigers took their first lead since the 15:43 mark in the first half when Tyler Brown's layup and free throw made the score 28-27.
Sewanee continued to push its advantage higher over the next three minutes. A three by Nilan Hodge and a layup by Leo Born gave the Tigers a six-point lead, 37-31, with 12:21 left.
Unfortunately, the Scots responded after a timeout by head coach Kyle Taylor. Out of the break, Covenant retook the lead after a 10-2 run.
The score would stay close over the final minutes. The Tigers eventually cut the Covenant lead down to one, 48-47, when Valentino Bryant hit a layup with 1:09 left.
After a turnover by Nate Frierson, Sewanee got the ball back with 24 seconds left. Unfortunately, a missed three by Lewis Affronti forced the Tigers to foul Covenant over the final seconds. From there, Colton McGriff extended the Scots' lead to three, 50-47.
Sewanee had one final chance to tie the game, however Bouldin's three missed right before the buzzer.
Despite a valiant effort in the second half, Sewanee could not overcome a season-low 40.5 shooting percentage and a season-high 23 turnovers.
Individually, Bouldin led Sewanee with a game-high 11 points. Additionally, Carter, who added eight points on 3-of-3 shooting, also played well.
Sewanee will finish the semester with a pair of games this weekend inside Juhan Gymnasium.
The Tigers will first take on Boyce College with a 6:00 p.m., contest Friday. Sewanee will then close out its annual Lon Varnell Classic with a 4:00 p.m., game Saturday, against Toccoa Falls.
