Box Score SEWANEE, Tenn. (Dec. 1, 2012) – A late second-half rally fell just short, as the Sewanee men's basketball team dropped a 50-48 decision against Southern Athletic Association (SAA) foe Centre, Saturday, inside Juhan Gymnasium.
Down by eight with 8:26 left, the Tigers battled back. A steal and a fast break dunk by guard Valentino Bryant sparked the run.
After a timeout and a defensive stop by Sewanee, Bryant cut the deficit to three, 46-43, with a three-pointer with 6:35 remaining.
Centre made a brief 4-2 run over the next five minutes, before a three by senior Brett Bouldin pulled Sewanee to within two with 1:43 left.
Unfortunately, down the stretch, the Tigers had their chances but could not convert. Two missed field goals and turnover gave Centre the ball back with 59 seconds to play.
After holding the Colonels to a missed jumper with 18 seconds left, Sewanee had one final chance. On the ensuing possession, a missed jumper and a pair of free throws would not go in which secured the Centre victory.
Coming off the bench, Bryant finished with a team-high 12 points on 5-of-10 shooting. Freshman forward Keshonn Carter also played well with a 10-point, seven-rebound effort.
Forward Tyler Wesley led three Colonels in double-figures with a game-high 14 points. The 6-6 freshman was joined by SAA leading scorer Josh Karsner, who added 11 points, and guard Blake Scinta with 10.
The Tigers will now return to non-conference action starting with an 8:00 p.m., contest Tuesday at regional-rival Covenant.
