Box Score ST. LOUIS, Mo. (Nov. 18, 2012) – Led by Cavallo Classic MVP senior Lewis Affronti, the Sewanee men's basketball team stayed unbeaten with a 72-64 victory over MacMurray, Sunday inside Grant Gymnasium.
With the two road victories over the weekend, Sewanee now has wins over defending SLIAC Tournament Runner-up MacMurray and last season's SLIAC Regular Season Champion Webster.
"I'm proud of how our team was ready to play this weekend," said head coach Bubba Smith. "I don't think we played great on both days, but fortunately we did enough to finish both games."
Along with Affronti, senior forward Tyler Brown was named to the all-tournament team.
Down by two, 31-29, at halftime, the Tigers started their comeback.
After a pair of Affronti free throws tied the score at 33-33, Brown gave Sewanee the lead with a jumper at the 17:14 mark.
From there, the Tigers would not trail again. MacMurray did manage to tie the game at 55-55 with 6:10 left, however a three by Affronti put Sewanee back in front.
The Tigers would eventually push their lead to as much as nine after a number of free throws by Valentino Bryant and Brett Bouldin.
"We were sloppy at the end of yesterday's game against Webster," said Smith. "I thought today's execution down the stretch was much better. I liked the balanced contribution we had both days from our starters and bench."
Overall, the Tigers shot the ball well for the second straight day. Sewanee finished 25-of-58 (43.1 percent) from the floor, which included an 8-for-20 effort outside the three-point line.
Individually, Affronti led Sewanee with a team-high 16 points on 4-of-10 shooting, Additionally, the Virginia Beach, Va., native was a perfect 4-for-4 at the free throw line.
Affronti was again joined by a host of Tigers. After hitting four out of five three point attempts, Bouldin finished with 15 points while Brown fell just short of a double-double with a 13-point eight-rebound effort.
Bryant also added 13 points to go along with a game-high six assists, four rebounds, and two steals.
Guard Spencer Pratt came off the bench to score a game-high 20 points for MacMurray.
"The good news is that we have a long way to go to reach this team's potential," said Smith. "I'm looking forward to getting back to work over the break and see how much we can improve before we take the court again."
The Tigers will now take some time off from game action due to the upcoming Thanksgiving break. Sewanee returns to action with a 6:00 p.m., contest Tuesday, Nov. 27th against Emory & Henry inside Juhan Gymnasium.
