Tigers look to retain Orgill Trophy in Homecoming showdown against rival Rhodes

Box Score

SEWANEE, Tenn. (Oct. 26, 2012) – In a rivalry that dates back to 1899, the Sewanee football team welcomes in-state foe Rhodes for Homecoming, Saturday

To paraphrase John Churchill's beautifully written Memphis Flyer article, "More Than a Game," tomorrow's 1:30 p.m., kickoff at Harris Stadium will again add to this long-standing Southern tradition.

A year ago, Sewanee returned the Edmund Orgill Trophy back to its proper place after the Tigers defeated the Lynx, 34-7.

The 113-year-old rivalry has stayed close over the years. Rhodes leads in the Orgill Trophy series 29-28-1 while Sewanee leads overall, 42-35-3.

The Tigers are coming off an impressive performance at Southern Athletic Association (SAA) member Birmingham-Southern last Saturday. In that game, Sewanee dominated the Panthers for a 31-19 victory.

Currently, the Tigers rank fifth among all NCAA Division III programs in rushing. Led by a strong offensive line, Sewanee also ranks 38th in fewest sacks allowed.

Additionally, the Tigers have the top-ranked defense in the SAA. This fall the Tigers have limited opponents to 319 yards per game.

Rhodes enters this weekend with a 4-3 overall record. After back-to-back wins, the Lynx struggled last Saturday in a 47-13 loss against Millsaps.

In its first seven games, Rhodes has used a balanced offensive attack. Of their 276 ypg, the Lynx average 140 ypg rushing and 135 ypg through the air.

Saturday will be Sewanee's 64th Homecoming, with the Tigers owning a 33-30 record in those contests.* Last year the Tigers ended a five-game Homecoming losing streak with a 27-13 win over Austin College.

* Note: The Athletic Department has a record of Homecoming scores starting in 1947. The 1949 Homecoming game is not listed.
