SEWANEE, Tenn. (Jan. 7, 2012) – Behind five players in double figures, the Sewanee men's basketball team earned an impressive 85-78 win over SCAC rival Centre Saturday inside Juhan Gymnasium. Additionally, this was the first win the Tigers have had over the Colonels since December 3, 2005.
After 13 first half lead changes, Sewanee (7-4, 2-3 SCAC) fell behind early in the second half after Centre made five straight baskets.
From there, things continued to stay tight when junior guard
Lewis Affronti's three tied the score at 55-55, with 13:45 to play. Fellow junior
Brett Bouldin then gave Sewanee its first lead of the second half, when he connected on a three the very next possession.
The back and fourth contest continued when Centre's Bryon Ellis tied the game for the 12 time, 65-65, with a three from the corner with 7:26 remaining.
The Tigers quickly retook the lead, on their next possession, when Affronti hit another three after a
Tyler Brown miss. The Tigers finally added some breathing room when Brown hit a three from the top of key with 3:18 to play. Like he did Wednesday against Covenant, the 6-5 junior continued to play well down the stretch.
With 1:52 to play, the Goodlettsville, Tennessee native hit his second three which extended Sewanee's lead to 76-69. After a pair of Colonel free throws, Centre was ready to pull to within a single offensive possession when Brown blocked Jeff Mullaney's jumper with 1:30 left.
From there, Brown, Affronti, and sophomore
Valentino Bryant added a number of key free throws to seal the win.
As a team, Sewanee shot a season-high 55 percent from the floor. The Tigers were a season-best 11-for-24 from behind the arc.
Individually, sophomore
Anvil Nelson had a team-high 20 points while Bryant pitched in 17. Bouldin added a season-high 14 points on 4-of-8 shooting. Brown finished the afternoon with 13 points while Affronti added 11.
For Centre, Jeff Mullaney had a game-high 25 points after going 9-of-12 from the floor. Forward Josh Karsner and SCAC leading scorer Greg Ross both finished the game with 19 points, respectively.
