IRVING, Texas. (Jan. 27, 2012) – Despite holding a late lead, the Sewanee men's basketball team dropped a tough, 64-61, contest at Dallas, Friday, inside the Mahler Athletic Center.
With the loss, the Tigers are now 10-7 overall and 5-5 in SCAC play. Meanwhile, Dallas improved to 5-14 overall with a 3-7 record in conference action.
Early on, Sewanee played well. The Tigers led by five, 30-25, when senior
Trent Williams hit a layup with 3:23 left in the first half. Unfortunately, from there, Dallas used a 10-2 run to end the half.
After both teams returned from the intermission, the Crusader offense stayed hot. Dallas built its lead to 11, 51-40, with 12:06 remaining after Curtis Gile converted his jumper inside. On the next possession, junior
Tyler Brown cut into the Dallas lead with his first three of the second half. After back-to-back layups by Brown and junior
Brett Bouldin, suddenly the Tigers were down by four, 51-47, with 8:43 to play.
Over the next three minutes, Sewanee continued to trim the deficit. A pair of free throws by Williams capped off a 7-2 Tiger run, which tied the contest, 55-55, with 5:42 remaining.
Minutes later, with the scored tied for the eight time, 59-59, Sewanee forced a turnover by Joe Stephens. With the ball back, Williams took a three, which missed. However, after the shot, Brown was fouled when he went up for the offensive rebound. That sent the 6-5 junior to line, where he connected on both free throw attempts.
After a Dallas missed jumper, Sewanee was sent back to the charity stripe with 1:14 remaining. Unfortunately, the Tigers missed both attempts, which gave the ball back to Dallas. The Crusaders then tied the contest, 61-61, on a Tanner Bruffey layup.
After a Sewanee timeout, Brown missed a jumper which set up the late-game heroics. After both teams again used timeouts, Dallas got the ball over to Stephens whose clutch three-pointer went in as time expired.
Brown led the Tigers with a game-high 19 points and seven rebounds. Three other Tigers, sophomore
Anvil Nelson, junior
Lewis Affronti, and senior
Sam Martin all finished with eight points each.
Dallas was led by Stephens who scored 14 points. The sophomore guard finished the night 3-of-4 from behind the arc, to go along with seven rebounds. Alex Winebarger added 14 points while Bruffey pitched in 10.
Sewanee returns to action with a 8:00 p.m. contest at Austin College, Saturday.
