SEWANEE, Tenn. (Jan. 20, 2012) –  Led by four players in double figures, the Sewanee men's basketball team earned an impressive 61-58 win over Trinity (TX) Friday inside Juhan Gymnasium.

With the win, the Tigers improved to 9-6 overall and 4-4 in SCAC play. Additionally, Friday's victory was the first time Sewanee defeated Trinity since the Tigers earned a 66-50 win back on January 9, 2004.

In front of an energetic crowd, the Tigers took their first lead when sophomore Valentino Bryant hit a layup with 10:09 remaining in the first half. After Trinity's Health Hopson put TU up one, 18-17, Sewanee finished the half on a 14-4 run.

Leading by 10 points, 33-23, at halftime, Sewanee continued to stifle Trinity's offense until midway through the second half. With Sewanee up nine, 44-35, Trinity eventually cut its deficit to two after Zach Lambert connected on a three with 9:14 left.

Over the next five minutes neither team led by as much as three with Sewanee holding a 52-51 advantage after Tyler Brown converted a pair of free throws with 4:55 to play.

After a three by junior Lewis Affronti, and a free throw by Bryant and sophomore Anvil Nelson, the Tigers found themselves up five, with just under two minutes remaining. However, Trinity again cut the lead to one, 57-56, after Hopson hit four straight free throws.

With only 25 seconds remaining the Tigers broke Trinity's press when Bryant was sent to the line after a hard foul at midcourt. The Hendersonville, Tennessee native then converted both free throws to put the Tigers up three, 59-56. On the ensuing Trinity possession Lambert's three point attempt missed which gave the ball back to Sewanee. From there, Affronti hit two more free throws, which put the game away.

Bryant led the Tigers with 15 points. Nelson added 14 points and 12 rebounds, while junior Brett Bouldin sparked the Sewanee offense off the bench, with a season-high 13 points.

Lambert led Trinity with 19 points on 7-of-15 shooting. The only other Trinity player in double figures was Hopson who pitched in 15 points, five rebounds, and one assist.

Sewanee will look to extend its four-game home winning streak when the Tigers take on Southwestern Saturday. Tipoff is set for 8:00 p.m. inside Juhan Gymnasium.
