ROME, Ga. (Sept. 8, 2011) – Playing in its third straight road contest the Sewanee women's soccer team could not overcome a strong first half by host Berry as the Vikings topped the Tigers of 2-1 Thursday evening at Ford Field in Rome, Ga.
Berry got its scoring underway quickly as senior forward Lee Hatheway found the back of the net off a nice pass from junior midfielder Sheena MacGowan with just six minutes off the clock.
However, Sewanee would respond in a hurry as senior forward Lizzie Butler got the Tigers on the board with an impressive goal to tie the contest at 1-1 in the 15th minute.
After both teams battled for offensive control for the next 20 miuntes of the half, Hatheway went on the attack again. After Kim Fischer lobbed a nice touch pass over the Sewanee back line, Hatheway then beat Tiger goalkeeper Virginia Zakas for the matches' final score.
Overall, Berry outshot the Tigers 13-8, while both squads tied with two corner kicks apiece.
Individually, Sewanee was led by Butler who fired three shots, while Zakas made five saves on Berry's seven shots on goal.
After spending the first week on the road Sewanee will finally return to the Mountain for its first home match of the season as the Tigers welcome Maryville College to "The Pit" for a 4:00 p.m. match, Saturday.
