Box Score: Sewanee vs. Southwestern
SEWANEE, Tenn. (Sept. 30, 2011) – After facing a tough non-conference schedule the Sewanee women's soccer team opened up SCAC play Friday in grand style as the Tigers dropped league foe Southwestern 2-0 at Puett Field.
With the win Sewanee improved to 3-5-1 overall, but more important the Tigers now sit with a 1-0 mark in league action. With the loss the Pirates fell to 3-6-1 and 0-1.
After junior goalkeeper
Britt Williams – who saw action after returning from a Week One injury – denied a number of Southwestern shots, sophomore midfielder
Allie White found the back of the net in the 34th minute giving the Tigers an early 1-0 lead.
Sewanee continued to play some of its best soccer of the season as the second half got underway. Midway through the period the Tigers quickly took advantage of a Pirate foul. On the ensuing free kick midfielder
Layne Ezzell played the ball inside the Southwestern box, where teammate
Lilly Barnett fired a shot towards the net. As Barnett's shot raced towards the net forward
Bess Goodman then deflected the ball just past the Pirate keeper for the 2-0 lead.
Overall, the Tigers aggressive style proved to be the difference offensively. Sewanee outshot Southwestern 23-9, while winning the battle on corner kicks with an overwhelming 10-1 mark.
Sewanee will now look to keeps its unbeaten conference record as the Tigers welcome Trinity to the Mountain for a 11:00 a.m. match, Sunday.
