Box Score: Sewanee vs. Birmingham-Southern
SEWANEE, Tenn. (Sept. 24, 2011) – Despite having a seven point lead at the end of the third quarter, the Sewanee football team could not hold off a late Birmingham-Southern rally, as the Panthers squeaked by the Tigers, 28-21, Saturday afternoon on McGee Field at Harris Stadium.
With Sewanee (2-2, 0-1 SCAC) leading 21-7 late in the third quarter, Birmingham-Southern (4-0, 1-0 SCAC) took advantage of a botched snap - on a Tiger punt attempt - giving the Panthers the ball on the Sewanee one. One play later, BSC quarterback Joseph Moultrie pulled the Panthers within a touchdown, with his second score of the day.
After Sewanee failed to pick up a first down on its next possession, the Panthers continued to roll with a 12-play 92-yard drive that was capped off with Moultire finding in the endzone with 7:09 left.
BSC continued its offensive comeback, minutes later, after another Sewanee four and out. After picking up a first down on a third and six play, from their own 16-yard line, the Panthers went back to workhorse tailback Shawn Morris. The Pensacola, Florida native carried the ball five of the next eight plays. Morris capped off his strong performance with the game-winning score with :37 seconds to go.
Early on, Sewanee took control of the contest, as senior slotback
Ben Cleveland scampered 20 yards on the Tigers first possession, giving UofS a quick 7-0 lead.
After Moultrie tied the game at 7-7, Sewanee sophomore quarterback
Curtis Johnson capped off a 74-yard drive, with 27 seconds left, the Tigers a seven point advantage at the break.
Johnson would go on and add his second score of the day, as Sewanne took its opening possession of the second half 94 yards on 11 plays, setting up the Tigers 21-7 lead.
Individually, Johnson led the Sewanee offense with a season-high 104 yards on 20 carriers and two touchdowns, while defensively,
Andrew Walters and
John Davenport made seven tackles a piece.
For the Panthers, Morris had his fourth straight 100 yard rushing game after finishing the day with 113 yards and a touchdown. On the defensive side of the ball, safety Andrew Shannon led Birmingham-Southern with 13 tackles – 12 being solo – and one pass breakup.
As a team the Tigers finished the day with 339 yards, with 256 of those coming on the ground. Despite Sewanee winning the possession battle 36:24-23:64, the Tigers were hampered by six costly penalties.
