TACOMA, Wash. (Sept. 17, 2011)
– Despite playing on a time zone two hours away, the Sewanee football team had little trouble adjusting to all the changes out West, as the Tigers outlasted Puget Sound, 34-23, Saturday, at Baker Stadium in Tacoma, Washington.

With the win, the Tigers move to 2-1 on the season, while the Loggers fell to 0-2. In fact, under first-year head coach Tommy Laurendine, Sewanee is now off to its best start since the 2008 season.

After Puget Sound led the Tigers 10-0 at the end of the first quarter, Sewanee finally got on the board as senior fullback Zeke Wilson found the end zone from five yards out, closing the Logger lead to the three, with 11:58 left in the second quater.

Two possessions later, the Tigers were on the attack again, as sophomore quarterback Curtis Johnson capped off a 15-play 73-yard drive - from five yards out - which gave the Tigers a 14-10 advantage at the half.

As third quarter action opened, the Sewanee offense stayed sharp. Starting at their own 34-yard line, the Tigers gradually drove the ball down field, where Wilson scored his second touchdown of the day, from two yards away.

Three minutes later, Sewanee's defense got in on the action as freshman Alex Head took back a George Ka'al interception 55 yards, giving Sewanee a 28-10 advantage.

Sewanee would go on and add one more score, after a Puget Sound three-and-out, with 4:45 left to play in the third quarter.

Overall, the Tigers out rushed the Loggers 218 to 81, while dominating the time of possession by over 10 minutes. Defensively, Sewanee picked off two Puget Sound passes, while forcing one fumble and a sack.

Individually, Johnson led the Tiger offense with 158 yards of total offense, and two scores, while sophomore linebacker Dave McKeithen produced 10 tackles and one pass breakup for the Sewanee defense.

The Tigers will now return to the Mountain for their first of two straight home games. Sewaee opens its homestand with a 1:00 p.m. contest against Birmingham-Southern, next Saturday.
