Box Score: Sewanee vs. Covenant
SEWANEE, Tenn. (Sept. 14, 2011) – Two early second half goals proved to be the difference as the Sewanee women's soccer team picked up its first win of the 2011 season with a 2-0 victory over regional-rival Covenant, Wednesday night at Puett Field.
With the win Sewanee improved to 1-3-1 on the year, while the Scots fell to 1-3-1.
After a slow first half of play the Tigers came out of the locker room with new found intensity, as
Ellie Quinn found the back of the net off a beautiful corner kick from senior forward
Lizzie Butler in the 52
nd minute.
Minutes later Sewanee was at it again as midfielder
Layne Ezzell found space between two Covenant defenders for a one-time goal to put the match away.
Overall, the Tigers outshot the Scots 16-5, which included a dominate second-half with the Tigers putting 10 shots on the board compared to Covenants' one. Defensively, goalkeeper
Virginia Zakas posted her first shutout of the season with one save.
Sewanee will now look to keep its winning ways at they take on North Carolina Wesleyan with a 3:00 p.m. contest, Friday in Fayetteville, N.C.
