BIRMINGHAM, Ala. 4/3/11 – The ninth-ranked Birmingham-Southern Panthers needed a late rally to nip the Sewanee Tigers 6-4 in SCAC baseball action today in Birmingham.
The visiting Tigers led 4-2 after the top of the fifth inning, but a two-run inning by Birmingham-Southern in the home half of the fifth and another in the sixth boosted the Panthers to the slim two-run victory.
The Tigers got on the scoreboard quickly in the top of the first inning when Alan Komorowski (Rochester, N.Y., Aquinas Institute) reached first base on an error leading off the game. After stealing second, Komorowski was chased home on a double by Joe Reilly (Milton, Ga., Mt. Pisgah). Taylor Irwin (Brentwood, Tenn., Battle Ground Academy) followed with a single moving Reilly to third. Chris Mauro (Washington, D.C., St. Alban's) then lifted a sacrifice fly to center scoring Reilly and giving the Tigers a 2-0 lead.
The Panthers answered with single runs in the first and second innings tying the score at two apiece.
In the top of the fifth inning Blake Williams (Metter, Ga., Metter) ripped a one-out double to right field. Komorowski then blasted his third homerun of the season to give the Tigers a 4-2 lead.
Birmingham-Southern was able to score two runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to retake the lead at 6-4. Panther relief pitchers were able to shut the Tigers out over the last four innings.
Birmingham-Southern outhit the Tigers 13-7 on the day. Seven Sewanee hitters had one hit apiece.
Irwin was charged with the pitching loss in relief of Mauro who started the game.
The Tigers fall to 0-5 in SCAC play and 8-14 overall.
Sewanee will be back in action on Thursday when they play host to Rust College in a doubleheader beginning at 1 pm.
