BIRMINGHAM, Ala. 4/2/11 – The Birmingham Southern Panthers, the ninth-ranked team in D-3, swept a doubleheader from the Sewanee Tigers today in Birmingham. The Panthers came out on top 7-1 in the first game and 12-2 in game two.
In the opening game of the afternoon doubleheader, the Tigers found themselves in a 1-1 deadlock with the Panthers after Franklin Pogue (Nashville, Tenn., Father Ryan) blasted a solo homerun in the top of the fifth inning. However, Pogue's homer proved to be Sewanee's only offense of the game.
Birmingham Southern was able to push across two runs in the bottom of the fifth and four more in the bottom of the sixth to take the 7-1 win in the scheduled seven-inning game.
The Tigers also got hits from Taylor Irwin (Brentwood, Tenn., Battle Ground Academy), Jack Rogers (Atlanta, Ga., Lovett) and Blake Williams (Metter, Ga., Metter) in the game.
Starting pitcher Lee Schurlknight (Darlington, S.C., Byrnes Academy) was the loser, working five innings and allowing six runs, three earned, on five hits. Austin Shea (Austin, Tex., St. Stephen's) pitched the final inning in relief of Schurlknight.
Birmingham Southern scored nine runs in the first two innings of the second game to take an early 9-0 lead and coasted to a 12-2 win.
Wilson Nealy (Nashville, Tenn., Montgomery Bell Academy) was the losing pitcher for Sewanee. Nealy lasted only two innings, allowing eight earned runs on ten hits.
Ryne Sullivan (Metarie, La., Isidore Newman) led the Tigers at the plate with two hits, including a double. Alan Komorowski (Rochester, N.Y., Aquinas Institute), Joe Reilly (Milton, Ga., Mt. Pisgah), Irwin and Colin Barrera (Ponte Vedra, Fla., Providence) all had one hit each. Irwin drove in one run.
Sewanee falls to 8-13 overall and 0-4 in conference play. The Tigers will return to action tomorrow when they square off again with Birmingham Southern at 1 pm in the finale of the three-game SCAC series.
