WINTER HAVEN, Fla. 3/19/11 – Finding themselves on the short end of a 6-4 score heading to the seventh inning of their final game in the Russ-Matt Invitational, the Sewanee Tigers exploded for eleven runs over the final three innings to take a 15-6 come-from-behind win today over Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts.
Franklin Pogue (Nashville, Tenn., Father Ryan) paced the Tigers at the plate going 4-for-6 with a solo homerun and an RBI. Five other Tigers contributed two hits each to Sewanee's 18-hit attack. Taylor Irwin (Brentwood, Tenn., Battle Ground Academy), Chris Mauro (Washington, D.C., St. Alban's) and Jack Rogers (Atlanta, Ga., Lovett) each belted a pair of doubles. Alan Komorowski (Rochester, N.Y., Aquinas Institute)chipped in a double and a triple and Joe Reilly (Milton, Ga., Mt. Pisgah) rapped out two singles. Irwin picked up three RBI while Rogers and Allen Thigpen (Gainesville, Fla., Oak Hill) knocked in two runs each.
Hugh Osteen (Georgetown, S.C., Salisbury (CT)) picked up his first collegiate win in relief of starter Irwin. Lee Schurlknight (Darlington, S.C., Byrnes Academy) pitched a scoreless ninth inning giving the freshman left-hander a streak of 19 consecutive scoreless innings.
With the win the Tigers up their record to 7-9 on the season.
Sewanee will open SCAC play on Tuesday night when they travel to Atlanta, Ga. to take on Oglethorpe University in a doubleheader beginning at 5 pm EDST.
