WINCHESTER, Tenn. 3/1/11 – The Sewanee Tigers dropped a hard-fought 9-7 decision to the Maryville Scots in a game played under the lights at Gamble Sports Complex in Winchester, Tennessee.
The Tigers were able to bring the winning run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth inning when they placed runners on first and second with only one out, but back-to-back strikeouts ended the Sewanee threat and the game.
Maryville jumped on Sewanee starter Lee Schurlknight (Darlington, S.C., Byrnes Academy) for three runs in the top of the first inning to take a 3-0 lead, but Schurlknight settled down and pitched brilliantly over the next four innings holding the high-scoring Scots scoreless.
Sewanee tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the second inning. Alan Komorowski (Rochester, N.Y., Aquinas Institute) drew a bases-loaded walk scoring Franklin Pogue (Nashville, Tenn., Father Ryan) who had reached base on a walk and advanced to third on consecutive singles by Colin Barrera (Ponte Vedra, Fla., Providence) and Blake Williams (Metter, Ga., Metter). Joe Reilly (Milton, Ga., Mt. Pisgah) then plated Barrera and Williams with a double.
Sewanee took the lead in the bottom of the third inning on Chris Mauro's (Washington, D.C., St. Alban's) one-out solo homerun to left field. The blast was Mauro's first four-bagger of the season.
The Tigers extended their lead to 6-3 over the Scots in the home half of the fifth inning. Reilly and Connor Liston (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., Episcopal) pounded out back-to-back singles. The runners moved up to second and third on a passed ball. Mauro followed with a sacrifice fly scoring Reilly from third. Pogue's roller to third base chased home Liston with the Tigers sixth run of the night.
Maryville was able to push across five runs in the top of the sixth inning to regain the lead and upped their lead to 9-6 with a single run in the seventh.
Sewanee cut the Maryville lead to 9-7 with an unearned run in the bottom of the eighth inning when Allen Thigpen (Gainesville, Fla., Oak Hill) scored on an error on a force play at second base.
Sewanee outhit Maryville 10-7 on the night.
Komorowski, on in relief of Schurlknight, was charged with the loss on the mound for the Tigers. Schurlknight fanned eleven Maryville batters in his five innings of work.
The Tigers fall to 1-5 on the season and will open SCAC play on Saturday when they host Oglethorpe University in a doubleheader at Montgomery Field. The first game will begin at noon.
