MARYVILLE, Tenn. 2/22/11 - The Sewanee Tigers struck quickly with a run in the top of the first inning, but the Maryville College Scots responded by scoring 12 unanswered runs over the next five innings to cruise to a 15-4 victory in Division 3 baseball action played today in Maryville, Tennessee.
The Tigers fall to 0-3 on the season while Maryville moves to 5-3.
Sewanee struck in their first at bat when Taylor Irwin (Brentwood, Tenn., Battle Ground Academy) drove home Joe Reilly (Milton, Ga., Mt. Pisgah) with a sacrifice fly. Reilly had reached third base on a line drive triple down the right field line.
The Scots used the long ball to strike back with single runs in the first and second frames, three runs in the third and fourth and four in the fifth to take a commanding 12-1 lead.
Sewanee rallied in the top of the sixth inning on a two-run single off the bat of Irwin. Irwin's one-out hit followed a single by Blake Williams (Metter, Ga., Metter) and a double by Alan Komorowski (Rochester, N.Y., Aquinas Institute).
The Tigers added their final run of the game in the eighth inning when Chris Mauro (Washington, D.C., St. Alban's) drove home Reilly with a double.
Sewanee's Jacob Simpson (Franklin, Tenn., Battle Ground Academy) was charged with the loss on the mound. Nick Bowers was credited with the win for the Scots.
Maryville outhit Sewanee 16 to 9 on the day. The Scots pounded out five homeruns, including three by Myles Cordell, who drove in nine runs.
The Tigers were led at the plate by Komorowski with two hits in four trips to the plate. Irwin drove in three of the four Sewanee runs.
Sewanee will return to action on Saturday when they host Spalding University at Montgomery Field. Game time is 1 pm.
