Box Score Box Score

For the second time this season, the Sewanee men's basketball team found itself on the wrong end of an SCAC clash with the Centre College Colonels. In Friday night's matchup, Centre jumped out to a 16-point halftime lead before taking home a 70-35 victory. With the loss, the Tigers move to 8-14 overall and 3-11 in conference play, while the Colonels move to 16-4 on the year and 11-2 in the SCAC.

With the game tied at zero until the 19:05 mark, the Colonels took an early lead with a short jumper by Greg Ross. At the other end of the court, Lewis Affronti answered with a trey to give the Tigers their only lead of the game, 3-2. After a Colonel layup and missed shots by the visitors, the host Colonels extended their lead to 6-3. Once again, the Tigers answered, this time with a jumper from Anvil Nelson, making it 6-5 Centre.

Centre followed that with a 9-0 run, pushing their lead to 10, 15-5. After a few made baskets by the Tigers, the Colonels used another 10-0 run to extend their lead to 17, 27-10. The Colonels also wrapped up the half with a 4-0 run, giving them a 36-20 lead heading into the intermission.

The Colonels opened the second half with a made 3-pointer by Bryon Ellis. After a couple turnovers and missed shots by the Tigers, the home team answered with yet another three, this one by Jeff Mullaney at the 17:27 mark.

But with several jumpers and layups, the Tigers started to slowly chip away at the lead. At the 8:19 mark, the Tigers cut the lead to 16, but, unfortunately, it was the closest the Tigers would come. The Colonels followed with an 8-0 run to give them a solid 60-35 lead with only 4 minutes remaining.

Anvil Nelson would hit the Tigers last basket of the game, a mid-range jumper, to make it 60-35, with 3:38 left to play. To close the game, the Colonels used a 10-0 run to make the final score 70-35.

Lewis Affronti led the Tigers with 13 points, after a 5 of 9 performance from the floor and a 3 of 4 showing from the 3-point line. Valentino Bryant added 12 points and seven rebounds.

As a team, the Tigers went 13 of 51 (25.5%) from the floor and 4 of 16 (25%) from beyond the arc. Sewanee finished the night 5 of 7 from the free throw line.

On the home side, the Colonels' Jeff Mullaney led all scorers with 14 points. Two other double figure scorers, Alex Lloyd with 10 and Bryon Ellis with 12, helped add to the Colonels 35-point win.

Centre finished the night 22 of 52 from the field (42.3%), 6 of 17 from the 3-point line (35.3%), and 20 of 26 from the free throw line (76.9%). The Colonels held a 47-25 edge on the boards.

The Tigers will return to action Sunday at 2:00 p.m. Eastern when they head to Greencastle, Indiana for an SCAC clash with DePauw.
