Strong first half helps Tigers race past Johnson University, 86-42

SEWANEE, Tenn. (Dec. 6, 2011) -
 The Sewanee men's basketball team opened a 38-8 lead midway through the first half en route to a 86-42 victory over Johnson University Tuesday inside Juhan Gymnasium.
 
With the win, the Tigers improve to 4-3 this season.
 
Sewanee took a commanding lead into the intermission. The Tigers shot 68 percent the first half while holding Johnson to a 5-of-22 (22.7 percent) performance.
 
In the second half, things stayed the same. Sewanee opened with a 22-7 run which gave the Tigers a 76-22 lead with 10:06 to play. Johnson cut the deficit to 44 when Cebastiano Loius made a pair of free throws with 1:20 remaining.
 
Freshman Robert Veal led the Tigers with a career-high 15 points. Sophomore Valentino Bryant added 13 points while forward Anvil Nelson pitched in 11 points on 5-of-6 shooting.
 
Ricky Bowen Jr. led Johnson with 12 points, four rebounds, and three steals. As a team, Johnson finished the night 15-of-50.
 
Sewanee returns to action with a 8:00 p.m. contest Friday December 16 against Oglethorpe.
