SEWANEE, Tenn. (Dec. 18, 2011) – The Sewanee men's basketball team could not overcome a sluggish start, as the Tigers dropped a 86-65 decision to No. 16 Birmingham-Southern Sunday inside Juhan Gymnasium.
As Sewanee (5-3, 1-2 SCAC) struggled early, the Panthers play extremely well in the first half. En route to a 30 point halftime lead, BSC shot 62 percent in the first half. That mark included the Panthers' 6-for-10 effort behind the arc.
Despite being down, Sewanee still played hard as the game progressed. The Tigers outscored BSC 43-34 in the second half. After shooting only 23 percent the first half, Sewanee shot 56 percent the remainder of the contest.
Individually, three Tigers finished in double figures. Junior
Tyler Brown led the way with 17 points on 7-of-13 shooting. Sophomore
Anvil Nelson posted a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds while classmate
Valentino Bryant pitched in 10 points.
Jasen Jonus and Griffin Schamp led the Panthers with 12 points each. Overall, BSC showed its depth as 11 players scored on the afternoon.
The Tigers will take two weeks off before returning to action against Covenant College (Ga.) January 4
th. Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m. inside Juhan Gymnasium.
