Field hockey falls against Rhodes in SCAC Tournament

Box Score

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (Nov. 5, 2011) – Despite a goal from senior Elise Landau, the Sewanee field hockey team dropped a close 3-2 match to rival Rhodes, in semifinal action of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Tournament.

With the loss, the Tigers' 2011 season ends with a 5-11 record. At the same time, the outstanding career of Landau also ended with the defeat. Overall, this season, the Wernersville, Pa., native closed out the year with a team-high 12 goals and 25 points.

"This was definitely a game to look at as we head into the off-season," said head coach Michele Dombrowski.  "We were able to pressure our opponent and generate opportunities.  Many of the players saved their best game for last. It is now important that we begin the spring season and next preaseason, like we ended this one."

Rhodes got the first goal of the match, with just 10 minutes off the clock, after senior Sara Sanders knocked in a rebound shot, which fell off of Sewanee goalkeeper Anna Morrow.

Ten minutes later, the Lynx padded their lead, as Sarah Kennedy notched a goal from the top of the circle.

Just when it looked like Rhodes would pull away, Sewanee responded with Landau's goal, after the senior captain scored with 12 minutes remaining in the period.

Unfortunately, any momentum that swung Sewanee's way after the Tigers pulled within one score, quickly disappeared, after Rhodes' Katie Faucher scored her 14th goal, right before time expired in the first half.

Despite playing from behind the remainder of the match, the Tigers did not quit. Late in the second half, Sewanee added one more goal.

Individually, Morrow posted a season-best 23 saves, while Rhodes held an edge in overall shots and penalty corners.

"We only graduate one player," said Dombrowski. "While we need to acknowledge Elise's amazing contributions (close to half our goals this season), we are excited that we have 16 returning girls with something to prove in the inaugural SAA season next fall."
