SEWANEE, Tenn. (Nov. 5, 2011) – In front of a massive Homecoming crowd, the Sewanee football team closed out its 2011 season with a 27-13 win over Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) member Austin College, Saturday at McGee Field at Harris Stadium.
With their victory, first-year head coach
Tommy Laurendine and the Tigers wrap up the season with a 5-5 overall record. Sewanee's five wins are the most since 2005.
Sewanee jumped out to an impressive start, after sophomore quarterback
Lee Schurlknight scored on back-to-back possessions in the first half. The second-year signal caller added a one-yard score on the first drive of the game, then found the end zone again, after the Kangaroos kicked a field goal later in the quarter.
With Sewanee up 13-3, the Tigers added another score right before the half. After a Sewanee timeout, sophomore quarterback
Curtis Johnson threw a screen pass – on fourth-and-eight - to
Andrew Keenan, who raced 26-yards for the touchdown.
After neither team put points on the board in the third quarter, the Tigers expanded their lead on a trick play with 2:37 left in the game. On the play, sophomore receiver
Chad Morehead threw a half back pass across the field to Johnson, who ran 39-yards to the end zone.
Austin finally found the end zone, on its next drive, after Sean Sweeny put the Roos in excellent field position with a 71-yard kickoff return. Three plays later, Austin tailback Shane Hodge scored from one-yard out.
Sewanee outrushed Austin by a 216-187 margin. Surprisingly, Sewanee gained more yards through the air than the Kangaroos. Led, by Schurlknight, Morehead and Johnson, the Tigers passed for 167 yards. Austin quarterback Noah Jesko, finished the game with 141 yards.
