SEWANEE, Tenn. (Nov. 18, 2011) – Led by a strong defensive effort, the Sewanee men's basketball team opened the 16
th annual Lon Varnell Classic with a 85-54 win over Boyce College Friday night inside Juhan Gymnasium.
With the victory, Sewanee is 2-0 to start the season.
The Tigers had three players reach double-figure scoring, led by junior guard
Lewis Affronti. Affronti had a game-high 25 points on 9-of-14 shooting. The Virginia Beach, Virginia native also converted five three point field goals, to go along with four rebounds.
In addition, junior
Tyler Brown netted 25 points while
Anvil Nelson added 11 points after going 5-of-9 from the field.
In the game, the Tigers' defensive pressure forced 20 Boyce turnovers while holding the Bulldogs to 28 percent shooting.
After holding a 48-25 lead at the intermission, Sewanee finished the game with 16 assists on 34 baskets while shooting 55 percent from the floor.
Matt Powell led Boyce with 12 points.
The Tigers return to action with a 3:00 p.m. contest against Free Will Baptist Saturday.
