Box Score: Sewanee vs. Roanoke
SEWANEE, Tenn. (Oct. 9, 2011) – Despite tying the match in the second half the Sewanee field hockey team fell to visiting Roanoke 2-1 Sunday afternoon at Tiger Field.
As play got underway both teams fired a number of shots throughout the first half. Despite the offensive chances, both defenses play well stopping every opportunity the first 37 minutes of action.
With time ticking down in the opening frame Roanoke finally broke the scoreless tie as Abby Bjork converted a penalty corner from teammate Lianna Machborn, giving the Maroons a 1-0 lead at the half.
Despite being down a goal to start the second half Sewanee came out strong. After not scoring on two corners to start the frame, senior forward
Elise Landau found the back of the cage in the 44
th minute off a pass that found the captain inside the circle.
Unfortunately, for the Tigers, the Maroons responded as Bjork converted the game-winner off of a Roanoke penalty corner seven minutes later.
Overall, the Maroons outshot the Tigers 24-14. Individually, Landau led Sewanee with five attempts, while
Anna Morrow made 11 saves on the day.
Sewanee returns to action at Sweet Briar College with a 1 p.m. match October 16
th.
