Box Score: Sewanee vs. Rhodes
SEWANEE, Tenn. (Oct. 2, 2011) – Despite having its best overall offensive performance of the season the Sewanee field hockey team could not convert all its chances as the Tigers fell to SCAC rival Rhodes, 4-1 Sunday afternoon at Tiger Field.
With the loss Sewanee now sits at 2-5 overall record, with a 0-3 mark in conference action.
“It was by far our most complete game from start to finish,” said head coach
Michele Dombrowski. “We made some adjustments that really should help us as we move forward. Clearly we need to focus on finishing, but we were creating opportunities and that has been a struggle lately.”
As play got underway Rhodes got on the board quickly as Taylor Mills fired home her first goal of the match – off a pass from teammate Libby Jones – with just over three minutes off the clock.
After Rhodes keeper Kelly Whelan turned away a number of Sewanee shots, the Lynx added to their lead as Sara Ferguson converted a pass from Sara Kennedy with 11 minutes to play in the half.
Just when it looked Rhodes would run away with the match, Sewanee kept fighting as senior forward
Elise Landau scored her team-best fifth goal, off a beautiful pass from
Anne Booke.
Unfortunately, for the Tigers Rhodes responded with a goal right before the half as Becca Martin found the back of the cage with two minutes to play.
Rhodes midfielder Mackenzie Holland added a late insurance goal from Sara Sanders for the final 4-1 tally.
Despite the loss Sewanee had a season-high 22 shots and 12 penalty corners to go along with goalkeepers
Anna Morrow's 10 saves.
Sewanee will now continue its four-match homestand as the Tigers continue conference play with a 4:00 p.m. match Friday October 7 against Centre.
