SEWANEE, Tenn. (Oct. 1, 2011) – For the second straight week, the Sewanee football entered the fourth quarter with a lead, however, just like last week's game against Birmingham-Southern, the Tigers failed to hold on to that margin, as Millsaps rallied for a 21-20 win Saturday at McGee Field at Harris Stadium.
With the loss, Sewanee falls to 2-3 overall and now sits with a 0-2 mark in SCAC play.
On the opening possession of the game, the Tigers stepped up as
Andrew Keenan blocked a Millsaps punt. After the block, freshman cornerback De'Nard Ford picked up the ball and raced 30 yards to the endzone giving Sewanee a quick 7-0 lead.
The scored stayed at 7-0 midway into the second quarter. Millsaps finally got on the board, as quarterback Konner Joplin found junior receiver Jason O'Rear for a 20-yard strike with 9:52 left in the first half.
On the Tigers next possession, Sewanee drove 31 yards on five plays, where junior kicker Garrett Schlosser nailed his first field goal of the day for 28-yards out.
Sewanee's defense continued to play well on the Majors next drive as junior safety
J.D. Crabtree recovered a fumble at the Millsaps 32 yard line, setting up Schlosser's second field goal from 46 yards away. In fact, Schlosser kick was not only a career-best for the Nashville, Tennessee native, but was within two yards of the school record set back in 2002.
As second half play got underway, Millsaps took advantage of a Sewanee three-and-out early in the quarter. Moments later, Joplin again found O'Rear for a eight-yard strike giving the Majors a 14-13 lead with 9:32 left in the third.
On the Tigers next offensive possession, Sewanee responded. Sophomore quarterback
Curtis Johnson found junior slotback
Jase Brooks for a 71-yard pass play – on third down and eight – setting up the Tigers at the Millsaps four. A play later, Johnson capped off the drive with his first touchdown of the day.
Unfortunately, the Seawnee lead wouldn't last long as Millsaps responded with its own 12-play 70-yard drive. On the drive Joplin tossed his third touchdown of the day to running back Thomas Theriot on a crossing pattern from just inside the Sewanee 10.
Overall, the Tigers were held to a season-low 136 rushing yards, while losing the total yards battle to the Majors 377-216.
One of the biggest difference in the game, was Millsaps ability to convert on third down. The Majors went 11-of-18 on third down conversions, while Sewanee struggled to move the chains going 2-of-11.
Individually, senior fullback
Zeke Wilson had a team-high 50 yards rushing on just nine carriers, while Johnson added 108 yards of total offense for Sewanee.
Millsaps had three players reach the 100-yard mark. Theriot rushed for game-high 106 yards on 21 carriers, while O'Rear added 114 yards on eight catches through the air. Junior signal caller Konner Joplin also played well for the Majors, finishing the day 20-of-31 for 203 yards and three touchdowns.
The Tigers will now look to regroup as they take on league-leading Trinity with 1:00 p.m. kickoff October 8
th.
