Sewanee, Tenn.-
The Sewanee Tigers led by as many as four with under five minutes left to play on Sunday, but visiting DePauw nailed back-to-back 3-pointers and knocked down six free throws in the final three minutes to take home a 60-55 SCAC win. After trailing by as many as 10 in the first half, Sewanee clawed its' way back to take a two-point lead into halftime but it wasn't enough, as DePauw kept it close throughout the second half before grabbing the win in the end. The loss drops Sewanee to 5-7 overall and 1-4 in the SCAC while DePauw moves to 8-6 overall and 3-2 in conference play.
DePauw jumped out to an early 9-2 lead behind five quick points from Sean Haseley and slowly pulled ahead by 10, 21-11, just past the halfway point of the first half. Host Sewanee used a 7-0 run to cut the visitors' lead to just one, 21-20, with just under four minutes remaining in the half.
After Sewanee cut it to one, Haseley knocked down a pair of free throws to put the black and gold Tigers back up by three. Sam Martin (Ringgold, Ga., Lakeview-Ft. Oglethorpe) hit one of two free throws for Sewanee to cut it to two, 23-21, before Trent Williams (Lawrenceburg, Tenn., Lawrence County High School) nailed a lay up to even the score at 23-23.
After Williams tied things up, Tyler Brown (Goodlettsville, Tenn., Beech) connected on two free throws to give Sewanee its' first lead of the contest, but Michael Wilkison knocked down a trey for the visitors to take the lead back, 26-25. Sewanee freshman Anvil Nelson (Brentwood, Tenn., Brentwood) responded with a short jumper to gain the lead right back and he added to it when he knocked down a second jumper in the paint to give Sewanee a 29-26 lead as the half wound down. DePauw's Ryan Sever knocked down one of two free throws with just six seconds remaining in the half to make it 27-29 Sewanee as the two teams headed into the locker room.
Brett Bouldin (Crossville, Ala., Crossville) knocked down a 3-pointer for the hosts to open up the second half before DePauw scored four straight to cut the Sewanee lead back to one, 31-32. Bouldin responded with another trey and Sam Martin knocked down one of his own as Sewanee went ahead by seven just four and a half minutes into the second half.
As soon as Sewanee took their largest lead of the game at 31-38, DePauw scored eight straight unanswered points to regain the lead, 39-38. Nelson connected on a lay up to give Sewanee the lead back and Lewis Affronti (Virginia Beach, Va., Norfolk Academy) grabbed a basket of his own to put Sewanee ahead by three. Drew Wills scored five straight points for the Indiana Tigers as DePauw briefly regained the lead, 44-42, with ten minutes left in the half.
The two squads traded baskets over the next five minutes as DePauw kept it close and Sewanee was never able extend their lead past four. With 5:50 remaining in the game, Bouldin connected on a 3-pointer to give Sewanee a 52-48 lead.
Both teams were held scoreless for over three minutes, but Wilkison, a freshman, nailed a three with 2:44 left to put DePauw within one. After a missed Sewanee basket and a DePauw rebound, Wilkison knocked down another three, this time with 1:36 remaining. Wilkison's second trey gave the visitors a 54-52 lead.
DePauw forced a Sewanee turnover with one minute left and after a DePauw timeout, Sewanee was forced to foul. Haseley connected on a pair of free throws to push the visitors' lead to 56-52 with just 29 seconds remaining. After another Sewanee turnover, the host Tigers were forced to foul again and this time Wilkison hit both of his freebies to put DePauw up 58-52 with ten seconds left on the clock. Anvil Nelson knocked down a quick 3-pointer with five seconds left, but Sewanee was again forced to foul. Drew Wills connected on both of his free throw attempts to put the game on ice with just two seconds remaining, giving DePauw a 60-55 win.
Nelson led Sewanee with 15 points, while Tyler Brown added 11, all of which came in the first half. Wilkison led all scorers with 21 points. Nelson chipped in five rebounds and three assists in the effort, while Valentino Bryant (Hendersonville, Tenn., Beech) recorded a season-high six assists, three steals and no turnovers. As a team, Sewanee turned the ball over a season-low five times.
The host Tigers shot 46.8% from the field in the game, including a 54.5% mark in the first half. They went seven of 15 from the 3-point line. DePauw was relatively even, shooting 47.2% from the field and going six of 16 from the field, but the charity stripe proved to be the difference. Sewanee went four of ten from the free throw line, including attempting, and missing, just one free throw in the second half. In comparison, DePauw went 20 of 23 from the line in the game, including a nine of ten in the second half.
Sewanee will be back in action when they host Trinity University in a SCAC match up on Friday at 8 p.m. Trinity is 6-7 on the year and 3-2 in the conference after a 73-57 win over Hendrix on Saturday.
