Three different Tigers finished with double-digit scoring outputs against Colorado College in men's basketball action Sunday afternoon, but a slow start and a large first-half deficit were too much for Sewanee to overcome. The Tennessee Tigers dropped an 86-62 SCAC road contest for the second time this weekend, falling to 6-10 overall and 2-7 in the conference. The win moves Colorado to 12-6 overall and 8-1 in the SCAC.
Lewis Affronti (Virginia Beach, Va., Norfolk Academy) knocked down a jumper 18 seconds in to get Sewanee on the board but Colorado scored seven straight points to take a quick 7-2 lead. The visiting Tigers got two straight baskets from Anvil Nelson (Brentwood, Tenn., Brentwood) to cut the Colorado lead to one, 7-6, early on. The two squads traded baskets for the next several minutes, finding themselves separated by just three points, 16-13, with 12 minutes left in the first half.
Colorado used a 17-5 run over the next six minutes to open up the ballgame and push their lead to 15, 33-18. Affronti connected on a 3-pointer for Sewanee to slow the Colorado attack, but the host Tigers ripped out another big run, this time 16-5, to head into the locker room holding a 49-26 advantage over Sewanee.
Sewanee opened up the second half with a pair of 3-pointers, one from Affronti and one from Brett Bouldin (Crossville, Ala., Crossville), sandwiched around a pair of Colorado free throws, cutting the hosts lead to 19, 51-32. Over the next seven minutes, the two teams continued to trade baskets, as Sewanee managed to get the difference down to 16, 58-42. But Colorado dropped in nine straight points to go ahead 67-42 and take their largest lead of the contest at that point, 25.
Sam Martin (Ringgold, Ga., Lakeview-Ft. Oglethorpe) connected on a short jumper for Sewanee to stop the Colorado run, but it wasn't stopped for long. The hosts got back-to-back baskets to go ahead 27, 73-46, before Nelson nailed a jumper for Sewanee. After Nelson's basket, the Colorado Tigers took off on another run of their own. They outscored Sewanee 11-2 over a three minute stretch to push their lead to 34, 84-50, with just three minutes left in the contest.
After Colorado pushed the difference to 34, Sewanee started a run of their own, outscoring the hosts 12-2 over the final three minutes, but it was too little, too late, as Colorado walked away with a 24-point win, 86-62, over the Tigers. During the final three minutes, Bouldin scored nine of his team-high 17 points.
Bouldin, who matched his career-high, set just last week against Southwestern, led all Sewanee Tigers with 17 points on 7 of 12 shooting. Nelson finished just one rebound shy of a double-double, ending with 14 points and nine rebounds. Affronti also added 14 points in the loss after going 5 of 10 from the field and 4 of 8 from the 3-point line.
Colorado's Nick Rose led all scorers with 20 points. Five Colorado Tigers finished in double-digits, including Brady Ohlsen with 14 and Joey Danek with 13. Ryan Milne and Zarome Lakey each added 10.
As a team, Sewanee went 25 of 60 from the field, good enough for a 41.7% field goal clip. They shot 32% from the 3-point line after going 8 of 25 from beyond the arc. Colorado went 32 of 60 (53.3%) from the field and 10 of 19 (52.6%) from 3-point range. Colorado committed just five turnovers in the win, while Sewanee turned the ball over nine times. The host Tigers also held the edge in rebounds, 36-30, over Sewanee.
The Tigers will be back in action Friday when they play host to Hendrix College at 8 p.m. The Warriors are 5-12 overall and 1-8 in the SCAC after an 85-63 loss to Birmingham-Southern on Sunday.
