The Sewanee field hockey team rolled past the visiting Transylvania University Pioneers 8-0 in non-conference action this afternoon. Three Tigers scored multiple goals as Sewanee outshot Transylvania 42-4.
Junior forward
Elise Landau started the Sewanee scoring barrage just under eight minutes into the contest when she scored on an unassisted shot that soared past Transylvania keeper Anna Melnykovych. Sophomore
Molly Kennedy followed quickly, scoring off an assist by
Caroline Carlin with 23:27 left in the first half. Sophomore
Anne Booke added two more first half goals of her own, giving her three goals on the weekend after scoring the lone Tiger goal against Centre on Friday. Booke's first goal came at the 15:29 mark when she connected with a
Carly Grimm pass to put one past Melnykovych and send the Tigers up 3-0. Booke would score again thirteen minutes later, putting an unassisted goal in the net at the 2:21 mark. The Tigers headed into the half up 4-0.
Transylvania managed to keep the Tiger offense at bay to start the second half, but Sewanee soon exploded for four more goals. Kennedy earned her second goal of the afternoon with 21:54 to play on an unassisted score to put the Tigers ahead 5-0. Senior
Caroline Carlin added to the Sewanee scoring attack at the 11:41 mark when she recorded her first goal of the weekend, putting the Tigers up 6-0.
Freshman forward
Karen Dawson wasted no time getting the Tigers on the board again when she scored less than two minutes later off an assist by Grimm.
Elise Landau, who started the scoring for the Tigers, finished off the scoring for the day when she put another unassisted goal past Melnykovych with just 38 seconds left in the contest. Landau's goal cemented the score at 8-0, in favor of the host Tigers.
Sewanee peppered Transylvania keeper Melnykovych all afternoon long, finishing with 42 shots on the day, 24 of which came in the first half. Transylvania mustered only four shots all afternoon, two in each period. The Tigers also led in corners, 12 to 3.
Tiger netminders
Anna Morrow and
Emily Detmer split time in goal, each earning two saves in 35 minutes of action apiece. Melnykovych finished the day with 14 saves.
Sewanee moves to 2-5 on the season with the win, while Transylvania drops to 1-5. The Tigers will resume SCAC play next weekend when they play host to Hendrix on October 1st at 4:00 p.m. and Rhodes College on October 3rd at noon.
