SEWANEE, Tenn. 9/25/10 – The Sewanee Tigers opened SCAC volleyball play today at Juhan Gymnasium by dropping straight set matches to \#17 Southwestern University and \#20 Austin College.
In their opening match of the day the Tigers fell to Southwestern by set scores of 25-7, 25-9 and 25-15.
Freshman Tarver Shimek (Towson, Md., Towson) paced the Tigers with seven kills. Adrienne Borchardt (New Orleans, La., Ben Franklin) contributed five assists. Liz Boddiford (Forest Hill, Md., Maryvale Prep) had five assists and two blocks. Shimek and Borchardt each had a service ace.
Austin College defeated Sewanee by scores of 25-12, 25-7 and 25-3.
Boddiford led the way for Sewanee with four kills, nine digs and one service ace. Borchardt recorded five assists and Shimek had one block.
“Playing two nationally ranked teams in one afternoon is a tough situation, but I think we learned about what kind of team we want to be after going up against this competition,” commented Sewanee head coach Jessica Cortese. “We are a young team and making progress each match is our goal. I think that fighting through adversity can only make us stronger, and one by one the players are catching the vision of how to make Sewanee volleyball a better program.”
Sewanee falls to 0-15 on the season and 0-2 in SCAC play. The Tigers will resume action tomorrow in the east-west cross divisional as they host \#7 Colorado College at 11 am and conclude play with a match against DePauw University at 3 pm.
