Gann reaches 1,000 career kills, Tigers split Sunday matches

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Senior Savannah Gann reached the 1,000-kill mark on Sunday as the Tigers fell to No. 9 Berry College in four sets while sweeping Oglethorpe University to conclude their SAA penta match.

Gann, a two-time all-SAA honoree, tallied her 1,000th career kill during the first set of the match against Berry.

In the loss to Berry, Suna Merkler paced the Tigers with 18 kills. Gann added 12, and Mollie White tacked on 10. Estela Gonzalez and Jordan Krise combined for nearly 40 assists, with Gonzalez' 21 leading the way.

Five Tigers made double-digit digs: Sophia Caruso (16), Keira Baldwin (14), Gann (14), Gonzalez (11), and Merkler (10). Gann also picked up five service aces.

Sewanee held Berry to a .000 hitting percentage in the first frame, taking an 11-2 lead early and winning the set 25-16. The Tigers led 21-18 in the second, but Berry closed out on a 7-0 run to tie the match, 1-1.

In the third, Berry came back from a slow start and held a 24-22 advantage. Sewanee used a 4-1 run, aided by three Merkler kills, to go ahead 26-25. The Vikings tied it at 26 off a Shelby Harris kill before an attack error gave Sewanee set point once again. Berry closed the set on a 3-0 run that included a pair of kills from Keira Kruk, winning 29-27.

Berry took a 7-1 lead to begin the fourth. The Tigers mounted multiple comeback efforts and found themselves down just 21-20 late, but Berry's match-high .243 hitting percentage proved to be too much. Berry won 25-22.

In the sweep over Oglethorpe, Gann had another double-digit performance, picking up 10 kills, while Krise and Gonzalez combined for 27 assists. Keira Baldwin paced Sewanee with 10 digs, and Merkler registered four aces.

In the first set, Sewanee took an early 9-3 lead and never really looked back, later ending the frame on an 8-0 run, in a 25-10 win. Sewanee hit .348.

The Tigers also dominated the second set early with an 8-3 advantage and won 25-16 off a .355 hitting percentage. In the third, the Tigers posted another 8-0 run to set up a 14-4 lead, later finishing with a 25-15 scoreline.

Sewanee held Oglethorpe to a -.029 attacking percentage.

The Tigers travel to Maryville College for an SAA quad match, beginning with a game against Southwestern on Friday, October 30 at 6 p.m. CT.
