The Sewanee field hockey squad opened conference play today, dropping a hard-fought 3-2 decision to DePauw University. Two penalty strokes made the difference for DePauw, which entered the match previously unbeaten and hadn't allowed a goal in five contests.
Sewanee took an early lead just under four minutes into the contest when junior
Elise Landau put an unassisted goal past DePauw goalkeeper Liz Attewell. DePauw struck back quickly with an equalizer by Margaret Ellis with 28:28 left in the first half, tying the two Tiger squads at one apiece.
Sewanee answered later in the half when senior
Carly Grimm slammed home a penalty corner from
Molly Kennedy. Sewanee held onto a 2-1 lead until DePauw's Katie Broecker was awarded a penalty stroke with just 17 seconds left in the first half. Broecker converted, knotting the score at 2-2 as the teams headed into halftime.
The score remained even until DePauw tallied its' second penalty stroke opportunity of the afternoon. Bridgette Shamleffer took a foul from a Sewanee defender with 13:28 to go in the contest, and after nailing the penalty stroke, Shamleffer and the DePauw Tigers went ahead 3-2, a lead they wouldn't relinquish for the rest of the afternoon.
DePauw outshot Sewanee ten to nine and both Attewell and Sewanee keeper
Anna Morrow finished with seven saves. Both teams finished with nine corners.
Sewanee drops to 1-4 overall and 0-1 in SCAC play after the loss. The Tigers will take on another SCAC foe when they host Centre College at 4:00 p.m. on September 24th. The DePauw Tigers move to 6-0 on the season and and 1-0 in SCAC play with the win.
