ATLANTA, Ga. 4/3/10 – Oglethorpe took both ends of an SCAC baseball doubleheader from Sewanee today. The Stormy Petrels downed Sewanee 13-4 in the opener and won the second game 11-8.
In the first game of the doubleheader Oglethorpe scored four runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings to break open a close game winning 13-4.
Greg Bartleski (Charlottesville, Va., Covenant) was charged with the loss on the mound for the Tigers working 3.2 innings allowing seven earned runs on seven hits.
Taylor Irwin (Brentwood, Tenn., Battle Ground Academy) paced Sewanee at the plate going 2-for-2 with a solo homerun, his fifth of the season. Joe Reilly (Milton, Ga., Mt. Pisgah) belted a solo blast and Michael Joseph (Orlando, Fla., Dr. Phillips) had a hit and an RBI.
In the nightcap of the twinbill Sewanee loaded the bases with one out in the ninth inning, but the rally fell short as the Tigers were only able to push one run across the plate in the inning falling to Oglethorpe 11-8.
Joseph picked up three hits, including his seventh homerun of the season, a three run shot in the top of the sixth inning. Chris Mauro (Washington, D.C., St. Alban's) was 2-for-3 with a single and homerun and three RBI. Chase Riemer (Chattanooga, Ga., Baylor) had three hits including a triple.
Logan Ray (Estill Springs, Tenn., Franklin County) suffered the pitching loss going three full innings giving up 11 hits and nine earned runs.
Sewanee falls to 6-18 on the season and 1-7 in conference action. Sewanee and Oglethorpe will complete the three-game series with a single game tomorrow afternoon.
