SEWANEE, Tenn. 4/18/10 – The Sewanee Tigers defeated the Rhodes Lynx 16-6 in eight innings in the final game of an SCAC baseball series played today at Montgomery Field in Sewanee.
Logan Ray (Estill Springs, Tenn., Franklin County), Mac McCallum (Rockville, Md., St. Andrew's), Rascoe Dean (Nashville, Tenn., Montgomery Bell Academy) and Greg Bartleski (Charlottesville, Va., Covenant) were honored in Senior Day ceremonies prior to the start of the game.
Rhodes jumped on Sewanee quickly for two runs in the top of the first inning.
Sewanee responded with a run in the bottom of the frame when Alan Komorowski (Rochester, N.Y., Aquinas Institute) drew a lead off walk. Chris Mauro (Washington, D.C., St. Alban's) followed with a single and Taylor Irwin (Brentwood, Tenn., Battle Ground Academy) drove home Komorowski from second with a single up the middle.
Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the second inning, Sewanee sent nine batters to the plate and scored five runs. Blake Williams (Metter, Ga., Metter) started the inning with a single to left. Joe Reilly (Milton, Ga., Mt. Pisgah) reached first on an error by the Rhodes pitcher McCallum was hit by a pitch loading the bases. Komorowski drew a walk driving in Williams from third and Mauro reached on an error plating Reilly. Irwin followed with his second hit of the day, a double down the right field line scoring McCallum and Komorowski giving Sewanee a 6-2 lead after two innings.
Sewanee upped its lead to 7-2 in the bottom of the third when Reilly walked with one out in the inning. Reilly moved to second on a failed pick off play at first and scored on a single to right by Komorowski.
The Lynx chipped away at the Sewanee lead with two runs in the fourth and two more in the top of the fifth.
Reilly gave Sewanee an 8-6 lead in the bottom of the fifth when he doubled home Williams who had reached first on a strike out and wild pitch.
The Tigers broke open a close game in the bottom of the sixth inning when they batted around for the second time in the game. With one out Mauro singled and Irwin followed with a double. Franklin Pogue (Nashville, Tenn., Father Ryan) reached base on a fielder's choice scoring Mauro. Joseph then singled to center field driving home Irwin. Dean drove in two more runs with a line drive triple down the right field line. Williams singled home Dean with the fifth run of the inning giving the Tigers a 13-6 lead.
Pogue singled home Irwin, who had legged out a two-out double, giving Sewanee a commanding 14-6 lead after seven complete innings.
The Tigers ended the game in the bottom of the eighth inning by pushing two runs across the plate. Williams lofted a flare double down the right field line to lead off the inning. With one out McCollum was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Williams and McCollum scored when the Rhodes' fielder overthrew home on Komorowski's slow roller to first base allowing McCollum to race all the home from second with the game winning run.
The Tigers outhit the Lynx 15-9. Irwin led the hit parade for the Tigers going 4-for-5 on the day with three doubles and thee RBI. Williams picked up three hits. Mauro and Joseph had two hits each.
Freshman Chase Riemer (Chattanooga, Ga., Baylor) was brilliant in relief of Sewanee starter Logan Ray pitching three and a third scoreless innings to pick up the win for the Tigers. Riemer allowed only one hit.
Sewanee improves to 7-26 overall and completes SCAC play at 2-13.
The Tigers will wrap up the 2010 season on Tuesday when they host Piedmont College in an afternoon doubleheader beginning at noon.
