SEWANEE, Tenn. 4/17/10 - The Rhodes College Lynx took both games from the Sewanee Tigers in an SCAC doubleheader played today at Montgomery Field in Sewanee.
In the first game of the doubleheader Rhodes picked up a 4-0 shutout win.
The Tigers best scoring opportunity of the game came in the bottom of the sixth inning when Taylor Irwin (Brentwood, Tenn., Battle Ground Academy) doubled with one out. Irwin advanced to third on a two-out infield single by Connor Liston (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., Episcopal), but the runners were stranded on an inning-ending ground out.
Chris Mauro (Washington, D.C., St. Alban's) was the losing pitcher for Sewanee working the complete game allowing four runs on nine hits.
Irwin and Franklin Pogue (Nashville, Tenn., Father Ryan) led the Tigers with two doubles each in three trips to the plate. Alan Komorowski (Rochester, N.Y., Aquinas Institute) and Liston picked up one hit apiece.
In game two Rhodes took a 10-5 victory. The Lynx jumped out to a 6-1 lead after the top of the fourth inning.
The Tigers struck for three runs in the bottom of the inning. Pogue led off the inning with a single. With one out Blake Williams (Metter, Ga., Metter) singled and Joe Reilly (Milton, Ga., Mt. Pisgah) walked to load the bases. Mauro followed with a single driving in two runs. Irwin's single plated the third run of the inning to cut the Rhodes lead to 6-4.
Rhodes pushed across two runs in the top of the sixth inning to increase their lead to 8-4.
With two outs in the bottom of the seventh Sewanee cut the deficit to 8-5 when Liston doubled to the gap in right center field scoring Pogue who had singled.
The Lynx increased their lead to five runs with a pair of runs in the top of the eighth inning to make the final score 10-5.
Senior starter Greg Bartleski (Charlottesville, Va., Covenant) was charged with the loss on the mound for Sewanee. Bartleski allowed ten runs on eight hits in seven innings of work. Logan Ray (Estill Springs, Tenn., Franklin County) pitched two scoreless in relief.
Pogue was 3-for-5 for the game with a double and an RBI. Mauro picked up two hits and two RBI for the Tigers.
Sewanee drops to 6-26 overall and 1-13 in SCAC play. The Tigers and the Lynx will wrap up the three-game series tomorrow with a single game scheduled for 1 pm.
