SEWANEE, Tenn. 3/7/10 – The Centre Colonels pounded out 18 hits and outlasted Sewanee 14-6 in the third and final game of a three-game SCAC baseball series today at Montgomery Field.
The Colonels jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead through two and a half innings.
In the bottom of the third inning with one out, Michael Joseph (Orlando, Fla., Dr. Phillips) reached first base on an error by the Centre shortstop. With two outs Alan Komorowski (Rochester, N.Y., Aquinas Institute)singled chasing Joseph to third. ConnoConnor Liston (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., Episcopal) was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Taylor Irwin (Brentwood, Tenn., Battle Ground Academy) provided the biggest hit of the day for the Tigers when he blasted a grand slam homerun to pull the Tigers to within one at 5-4.
Centre responded with a six-run fourth inning to increase their lead to 11-4.
Sewanee came back with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Franklin Pogue (Nashville, Tenn., Father Ryan) led off the inning with a single. Chase Riemer (Chattanooga, Ga., Baylor) followed with a double. Ryne Sullivan (Metarie, La., Isidore Newman) grounded out to second to plate Pogue and Joseph drove Riemer home with a single.
The Colonels added two runs in the top of the sixth inning and a single run in the top of the ninth to make the final score 14-6.
Centre outhit Sewanee on the day 18-5.
Wilson Nealy (Nashville, Tenn., Montgomery Bell Academy) was charged with the loss on the mound pitching two innings giving up four runs, all earned, on five hits.
Sewanee is now 1-8 overall and 1-2 in SCAC play.
The Tigers' next action will be on Friday. March 12 when they play Drew University in Winter Park, Fla. at the Russ-Matt Invitational.
