SEWANEE, Tenn. 3/28/10 – With the help of a nine-run outburst in the top of the seventh inning, the Birmingham Southern Panthers defeated Sewanee 15-5 and gained the three-game SCAC series sweep today at Montgomery Field in Sewanee.
Sewanee is now 6-16 on the season and 1-5 in SCAC play. Birmingham Southern improves to 19-4 overall and 5-1 in the SCAC.
The Panthers jumped out to a 3-0 lead after three and a half innings of play.
Sewanee cut the lead in the home half of the fourth inning to 3-2 on an opposite field homerun off the bat of Michael Joseph (Orlando, Fla., Dr. Phillips), his fourth homerun in the last two games. Joseph's homerun drove in Franklin Pogue (Nashville, Tenn., Father Ryan) who had singled to lead off the inning.
After the Panthers picked up a run in the top of the fifth inning, Sewanee answered back with a run of their own. Taylor Irwin (Brentwood, Tenn., Battle Ground Academy) singled home Alan Komorowski (Rochester, N.Y., Aquinas Institute), who had reached base on a fielder's choice, from third base. Komorowski had stolen second base and moved to third on a groundout.
Birmingham Southern then put up ten unanswered runs scoring one in the top of the sixth inning and exploding for nine in the seventh to take a 14-3 lead over the Tigers.
Sewanee picked up two runs in the bottom of the seventh on a two-run homerun by Chris Mauro (Washington, D.C., St. Alban's). Mauro's homer scored Komorowski who had doubled.
The Panthers picked up one run in the top of the eighth inning to make the final score 15-5.
Jacob Simpson (Franklin, Tenn., Battle Ground Academy) was the starter and loser for Sewanee. Michael McCalib picked up the win for B.S.C.
Mauro, Joseph and Irwin all had two hits for the Tigers. Mauro and Joseph each belted a two-run homerun.
Sewanee will return to action in Atlanta, Ga. on Saturday when they open a three-game SCAC series with Oglethorpe.
