SEWANEE, Tenn. 3/27/10 – The Birmingham Southern Panthers slugged their way to a 16-3 win over the Sewanee Tigers in the first game of an SCAC baseball doubleheader played today at a windy Montgomery Field.
The second game was suspended because of darkness after the top of the ninth inning with Birmingham Southern leading 14-13. Game 2 will be resumed tomorrow at the point it was suspended. The third and final game of the series will be played immediately following the completion of the suspended game.
In the first game of the doubleheader Birmingham Southern jumped out to a 9-0 lead after three and a half innings. The Panthers picked up four runs in the top of the first, three in the third and two more in the fourth.
The Tigers finally got on the scoreboard in the home half of the fourth inning on a lead off homerun by Taylor Irwin (Brentwood, Tenn., Battle Ground Academy) making the score 9-1.
The Panthers upped their lead to 11-1 on two runs in the top of the fifth inning.
In the bottom of the fifth Sewanee loaded the bases with one out on a walk to Joe Reilly (Milton, Ga., Mt. Pisgah), a single by Connor Liston (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., Episcopal) and Irwin's third hit of the day, but a double play ended the inning and the threat.
With Birmingham Southern leading 12-1, the Tigers loaded the bases again with two outs in the bottom of the sixth. Chris Mauro (Washington, D.C., St. Alban's) led off the inning with a double off the right field fence and Chase Riemer (Chattanooga, Ga., Baylor) and Reilly drew walks. A pop out to third ended the inning standing the runners.
A four-run seventh by the Panthers made the score 16-1.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Liston was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Irwin followed with his second homerun of the game making the final score 16-3.
Birmingham Southern outhit Sewanee 18-13 in game one.
Irwin's perfect 4-for-4 day at the plate with two homers and three RBI led Sewanee. Mauro picked up three hits, including a double and Franklin Pogue (Nashville, Tenn., Father Ryan) had two hits.
Starting pitcher Logan Ray (Estill Springs, Tenn., Franklin County) was the losing pitcher for Sewanee.
Sewanee is now 6-14 on the season and 1-3 in SCAC play.
