SEWANEE, Tenn. 2/27/10 – The Maryville Scotts swept the Sewanee Tigers in Division 3 baseball action today at a frigid Montgomery Field in Sewanee.
In Game 1, Maryville took the lead early and held on for the 13-6 victory in the scheduled seven-inning game.
The Scots got off to a quick 2-0 lead on a two-run homerun in the top of the first inning off Tiger starter Greg Bartleski (Charlottesville, Va., Covenant). Sewanee countered in the bottom half of the inning with a run when Chris Mauro (Washington, D.C., St. Alban's) singled home Joe Reilly (Milton, Ga., Mt. Pisgah), who had singled with one out in the inning.
In the second inning Maryville made the score 3-1 with a single run in the top of the frame. Sewanee cut the lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the second. Chase Riemer (Chattanooga, Ga., Baylor) led off the inning with a double and scored on an Alan Komorowski (Rochester, N.Y., Aquinas Institute) one-out infield single.
The Scots stretched their lead to 8-2 with two runs in the third and three runs in the fourth.
Sewanee picked up their third run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning. Komorowski doubled to lead off the inning. He was chased home on a single off the bat of Taylor Irwin (Brentwood, Tenn., Battle Ground Academy).
The Tigers mounted their biggest threat of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning as they cut the Scots lead to 8-5 on a pair of runs. Michael Joseph (Orlando, Fla., Dr. Phillips) reached base on an error by the Maryville second baseman. After a walk to pinch-hitter Ryne Sullivan (Metarie, La., Isidore Newman), Reimer bounced into a fielder's choice forcing Sullivan out at second and advancing Joseph to third. Joseph scored on a wild pitch. Connor Liston (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., Episcopal) was hit by a pitch. Komorowski then singled home Riemer for the second run of the inning.
Maryville added and run in the top of the sixth to take a 9-5 lead in the game.
The Tigers scratched out a run in the bottom of the sixth to cut the lead to 9-6, but Maryville erupted for four runs in the top of the seventh to secure the final margin of 13-6
Maryville pounded out eleven hits in the game and Sewanee collected ten. The Tigers committed five errors.
Komorowski came up big at the plate for the Tigers picking up three hits including a double and two RBI.
Bartleski was charged with the loss on the mound going four innings allowing six earned runs on five hits. Bartleski struck out eight Maryville batters. Wilson Nealy (Nashville, Tenn., Montgomery Bell Academy) and Jacob Simpson (Franklin, Tenn., Battle Ground Academy) pitched in relief of Bartleski.
In the second game of the afternoon doubleheader, Logan Ray (Estill Springs, Tenn., Franklin County) scattered thee hits but came up the hard luck loser as Maryville took a 1-0 win in a game shortened to six inning due to darkness.
The Scots picked up the only run of the game in the top of the second inning.
The Tigers outhit Maryville 6-3 in the second game. Irwin led Sewanee at the plate with two singles. Franklin Pogue (Nashville, Tenn., Father Ryan), Komorowski, Reimer and Mauro also had hits.
Sewanee is now 0-5 on the season and will square off with North Park College in a single game tomorrow at 1 pm and Montgomery Field.
