Strong shooting lifts Stormy Petrels over Tigers in SCAC opener

Box Score Box SCORE

The Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels shot lights out on their way to a 96-50 victory over Sewanee Saturday night in Atlanta. The Tigers open up SCAC play at 0-1 after the loss, while Oglethorpe moves to 1-0 in the conference. The Petrels shot over 58% on the night, including 64.5% from the field and 71.4% from the 3-point line in the first half, to dispose of the Tigers early on.

The Petrels shot early and often in the first half, without a lot of misses, as they cruised to a 51-23 lead at halftime. Alec Pitts opened up the scoring for the hosts just 15 seconds in when he nailed a trey to put Oglethorpe up 3-0. The Tigers responded, though, as Matt Cowan (Goodlettsville, Tenn., Beech) drained a 3-pointer of his own to even things up at 3-3 in the early-goings. But Alex Richey pitched in a lay up to push it 5-3 and the Petrels never relinquished the lead for the rest of the contest.

Sewanee and the Petrels traded baskets for the next eight minutes and the Tigers managed to keep it within seven until the midway point of the first half. After back-to-back lay ups by Andrew Steioff and Sam Purdy, Oglethorpe extended their lead to 13, 23-10. A lay up by Sewanee freshman Anvil Nelson (Brentwood, Tenn., Brentwood) cut the Petrel lead to 11 but Oglethorpe responded with a 3-pointer by Joe Kennedy to push the lead to 14. Lewis Affronti (Virginia Beach, Va., Norfolk Academy) knocked down a three for the Tigers, Cowan added a field goal on a fast break, and Affronti drained a second 3-pointer, as Sewanee cut the lead to eight with just under seven minutes remaining in the half. Steioff got a basket in the paint to make it a 10-point lead, but Affronti nailed his third trey in a 1:45 span to cut the Oglethorpe lead to seven.

The seven-point difference was the closest the Tigers would get for the rest of the night. Four different Petrels knocked down treys as Oglethorpe went on an 18-5 run to close out the first half. The hosts headed into the locker room with a comfortable 51-28 lead.

Try as they might, the Tigers were never able to get closer than 23 in the second half. Sewanee turned the ball over 11 times in the half, to the Petrels four, and the hosts got 28 points from their bench as they extended their lead to as many as 47 in the period. The Tigers never seemed to find their shooting touch in the second half either, going just 9 of 28 from the field and 3 of 15 from behind the 3-point line.

Affronti led the Tigers with 13 points, while Nelson chipped in eight and Cowan turned in seven. Oglethorpe's Richey tallied 18 points to lead all scorers. Nelson led Sewanee with four rebounds, as the Stormy Petrels out rebounded the Tigers 40-27.

The Tigers shot just over 35% from the field and just shy of 35% from the 3-point line in the contest. The Petrels shot at a 58.5% clip from field goal range in the game, including 64.5% in the first half. The hosts went 53.8% from beyond 3-point land in the game and a staggering 71.4% beyond the arc in the first half.

The Tigers fall to 4-2 on the season, while Oglethorpe moves to 4-3 on the year. Sewanee is off until December 17th, when they host Webster University in the first day of action of the Lon Varnell Classic. Webster defeated the Tigers 67-60 earlier in the year.
