Sewanee took a nine-point lead into the locker room at halftime and extended the lead to as many as 26 in the second half before running away with a 23-point victory over visiting Johnson Bible College tonight. Sophomore Brett Bouldin (Crossville, Ala., Crossville) was five of seven from beyond the three-point line to lead the Tigers with 19 points in the win. Bouldin picked up 14 of his points in the second half as 11 different Tigers found the scoring column.
Sewanee jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead early in the first half on a lay up by Anvil Nelson (Brentwood, Tenn., Brentwood), a three from Matt Cowan (Goodlettsville, Tenn., Beech), and a lay up from Lewis Affronti (Virginia Beach, Va., Norfolk Academy), all in the first minute of play. Johnson Bible finally found the basket at the 18:37 mark when Tyler Griffin knocked down a three-pointer to cut the Tiger lead to four. But the Preachers couldn't keep up with the Tigers, as Sewanee steadily increased their lead to 12 over the next several minutes. Cowan and freshman Valentino Bryant (Hendersonville, Tenn., Beech) both knocked down treys in the run, as the Tigers went ahead 22-10.
The Preachers were able to cut the Tiger lead to just four after Caleb Baker and Griffin combined to score eight straight to make it 22-18 Sewanee. The Tigers responded quickly and pushed their lead back to 10 on a short jumper by Nelson and two straight baskets from Tyler Brown (Goodlettsville, Tenn., Beech). Griffin hit a three for the visitors to make it 28-21 Sewanee, but the Tigers got a pair of free throws from Trent Williams (Lawrenceburg, Tenn., Lawrence County High School), a lay up from Bryant, and a jumper from Bouldin to extend their lead to 13. Johnson Bible nailed a couple of baskets to make it 34-27 Tigers, but Sewanee's Sam Martin (Ringgold, Ga., Lakeview-Ft. Oglethorpe) laid down a thunderous dunk at the 1:40 mark to give the hosts a nine-point lead heading into the locker room.
Sewanee quickly pushed their lead to 15 in the second period, after getting two baskets from Affronti, a three from Tony Marelle (Atlanta, Ga., Mt. Pisgah), and a lay up from Martin. The Preachers cut it to 11 on a three and a free throw from Jeremy Stevenson but that would be the smallest margin of the half. Sewanee dominated for the next 15 minutes, pushing their lead to as many as 26 at one point. Johnson Bible was able to cut the lead to merely 17 with 3:27 left, but the Tigers were just too much for the Preachers to handle. Sewanee came away with the 23-point victory, 83-60, to move to 3-1 on the season.
Bouldin led the Tigers with 19 points, while Bryan Beviacqua (Gulf Shores, Ala., Gulf Shores) chipped in 12, all in the second half. Nelson and Affronti pitched in 10 points apiece for the hosts. Johnson Bible's Griffin led all scorers with 20 points. Martin grabbed seven rebounds for Sewanee, while Beviacqua hauled in six and Affronti tallied five, as the Tigers outrebounded the Preachers 42-29. Marelle recorded a game-high five assists while Sewanee turned the ball over only five times in the contest.
The Tigers went 32 of 74 from the floor, including 10 of 34 from beyond the three-point line, to tally a 43.2% shooting night. The Preachers shot 42.6% from the field and were 20 of 47 on the night. Sewanee went eight of nine from the free throw line.
Sewanee will head to Free Will Baptist College for a contest on Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. before traveling to Atlanta for their conference-opener with Oglethorpe on Saturday. The Stormy Petrels are 3-2 on the year after a 77-47 win over LaGrange on Sunday. Sewanee lost both contests with Oglethorpe last season.
