Rhodes takes one from Sewanee in Field Hockey, 3-0

Box Score

The Tiger field hockey team fought through a tough 70 minutes of play with visiting Rhodes College today, but fell 3-0 to the Lynx. The two teams played an evenly matched contest, but Rhodes came away with a little more luck than the Tigers as the Lynx moved to 9-1 on the season and 4-0 in conference play. Sewanee falls to 3-6 overall and 1-3 in the SCAC.

Both teams came out of the gates on Sewanee's senior day with an intense level of play, moving the ball up and down the field all afternoon. The Tigers and Lynx traded offensive attacks throughout the contest but Rhodes' Chelsea McLeod got the Lynx on the board first. McLeod sent a blistering shot past Sewanee goalkeeper Anna Morrow (Annapolis, Md., St. James) just seven minutes into the contest, putting Rhodes up 1-0 early.

After McLeod's goal, the Tigers had several opportunities to even the score, including several impressive shots from senior Carly Grimm (South Salem, N.Y., John Jay), but Lynx goalkeeper Sarah Dockery remained strong, denying the Tigers any goals. Sewanee continued to battle through the rest of the first half, but were forced to head into halftime down a goal.

Sewanee continued to bring the pressure in the second half, but Rhodes was able to slip one past the Tigers at the 29:16 mark. A strange shot from Rhodes' Libby Feaster soared six feet above Sewanee's Morrow's head before falling behind her and into the net for a Lynx goal. Just six minutes into the second half, Rhodes moved ahead 2-0.

But the Tigers never gave up and continued to battle for the rest of the game. Sewanee continued to attack the Lynx but were held scoreless, despite several opportunities. The Tigers collected five corners in the second half, but weren't able to capitalize, as a strong Rhodes defense held firm. The Lynx were able to add an insurance goal from Charlie Wagner with just 2:20 left on the clock to make it 3-0 on the day.

Rhodes held the advantage in shots, 16-14, over the Tigers, taking one more in each period than the Tigers. Sewanee led in corners, six to four, tallying five in the second half alone. Morrow finished the day with nine saves in 70 minutes in play. Dockery added seven saves for the Lynx.

Sewanee will be back in action next weekend when they travel to Greencastle, Indiana for an SCAC clash with DePauw University on Saturday. DePauw is 9-2 on the season and 3-1 in SCAC play after topping Hendrix this afternoon. The Indiana Tigers prevailed in their first meeting with Sewanee earlier this year, 3-2.
