Box Score
Sewanee's Elise Landau (Wernersville, Pa., Lancaster Country Day) got the Tigers on the board early in the second half, but it wasn't enough, as Sewanee fell to Centre College, 2-1, in field hockey action tonight. The Tigers fall to 4-11 on the season and 1-7 in SCAC play, while the Colonels move to 10-4 overall and 4-3 in conference play.
Sewanee came out shooting in the first half and out shot the Colonels six to five in the period, but Centre drew first blood when Chelsea Klein took a pass from Anna Fuller and put it past Sewanee goalkeeper Anna Morrow (Annapolis, Md., St. James). Klein's goal came at the 23:12 mark and put the host Colonels ahead 1-0. Both teams remained quiet throughout the rest of the half and Centre headed into the locker room clinging to the one point lead.
Landau didn't waste much time getting the Tigers on the board in the second half. Just eight minutes into the period Landau put an unassisted shot past Centre keeper Patty Cowley, notching the score at one apiece.
Unfortunately for Sewanee though, the tie didn't last for long. Just one minute and 46 seconds later, Centre's Alexis Hebert found the net on a pass from Barbara Parks, breaking the tie with what proved to be the game-winner. The Tigers just weren't able to overcome Centre's defense and the Colonels held on for the 2-1 win.
The two squads were even in shots, with eight apiece, while Centre led in corners, six to four. Morrow tallied three saves in 70 minutes of action, while Cowley recorded six saves for the hosts.
The Tigers now head to Lexington, Kentucky for a Sunday afternoon clash with Transylvania University. Sewanee topped Transy in a big way in their first match of the year, an 8-0 win on the Mountain in September. The Pioneers are 1-12 on the season after falling to Oberlin 5-0 on Monday.
