Goodman picks up two goals in Tiger victory

Box Score

Sewanee sophomore Bess Goodman (Greensboro, N.C., Grimsley) scored two first-half goals one minute and 31 seconds apart, as the Tiger women's soccer team downed host Covenant College 3-1. Goodman's goals, her sixth and seventh goals in the last three games, put Sewanee ahead early in the first half and the Tigers never looked back, as they cruised to their third win in a row.

The Tigers started off hot in the first half, collecting eight shots in the period, while limiting the Scots to just three. Goodman opened up the scoring with her seventh goal of the season when she put one past Covenant goalkeeper Bethany Holman just over fourteen minutes into the contest. Goodman's goal came off a free kick after a Covenant foul.

Goodman pushed the Tiger lead to 2-0, when just 1:31 later, she pushed another shot past Holman, this time off an assist by Faith Spencer (New York, N.Y., Hotchkiss). Covenant wouldn't stay quiet for long though, as the Scots got on the board at the 23 minute mark when Lauren Probst scored off a corner kick to make it 2-1.

Sewanee came out even stronger in the second half though, as the Tigers racked up ten shots, while the defense held the Scots to just two shots in the period. Faith Spencer picked up her third goal of the season when she added a Tiger insurance goal at the 59:25 mark. Goodman and Spencer accounted for every Tiger point of the evening. The defense held on after Spencer's score, as Sewanee picked up the 3-1 victory.

The Tigers finished the night with the edge in shots, 18-5, and finished even in corner kicks, 4-4. Virginia Zakas (Atlanta, Ga., Westminster) picked up the win in goal for the Tigers after stopping three Scot shots.

Sewanee moves to 7-5 on the year with their third straight win. The Tigers will play host to two SCAC contests next weekend when they host Rhodes on Friday night and Hendrix on Sunday. Rhodes is 5-6 on the season and 3-2 in SCAC play. Hendrix is 1-9 on the year and 0-5 in conference action.
