Field Hockey falls to eighth-ranked Bellarmine

Box Score

Eighth-ranked Bellarmine University limited visiting Sewanee to just eight shots, as the Knights rolled over the Tigers, 7-1, in field hockey. Sewanee's Taylor Skeen (Baltimore, Md., Towson) put her second goal in as many games into the net early in the second period, but Division II Bellarmine was just too much for Sewanee.

Bellarmine's Lauren Schmeing picked up her first goal of the game just 2:11 seconds into the contest when she scored off a penalty corner. The Knights made it 2-0 just five minutes later, when Schmeing set up Bellarmine's Moriah Facktor, who sent her shot past Sewanee goalkeeper Anna Morrow (Annapolis, Md., St. James).

Things were quiet for much of the first half after the Knights' second goal, but Bellarmine's offense picked things up again heading into the half. Rachel Walz, Schmeing, and Brittany Raque all notched goals for the hosts in the last five minutes of the half. The Tigers headed into halftime down 5-0.

Sewanee was able to find a bright spot just over a minute into the second half. Skeen, a senior, picked up her second goal of the weekend when she scored off an assist from Caroline Carlin (Gladwyne, Penn., Country Day) on a penalty corner. Skeen's goal put the Tigers on the board and made it 5-1, but the Knights weren't done yet. At the 54th minute, Bellarmine's Natalie Perry made it 6-1 on an assist from Schmeing. Just 45 seconds later, the Knights added their last goal of the day, a score from Raque, to make it 7-1.

The Knights held the advantage in shots, 23-8, over the Tigers, and also led in corners, 10-3. Morrow netted six saves in 35 minutes of play for Sewanee, while Emily Detmer (Denver, Colo., Pomfret) added two in the second half.

The Tigers return to action on Saturday when they play host to Washington and Lee University. The Generals of W&L are 6-4 after dropping an 8-0 decision to Lynchburg yesterday. Sewanee is now 3-8 on the year.
