SEWANEE, Tenn. – The Sewanee field hockey team hosted Transylvania in its home opener in Sewanee on Saturday and topped the visiting squad 4-1 after leading 2-1 at the half.
Cameron Herndon (Winston-Salem, N.C., Forsyth Country Day) scored first for Sewanee in the sixth minute before Elise Landau (Wernersville, Pa., Lancaster Country Day) for Sewanee and Shawna Corman for Transy scored in the 17th minute to leave the first half score at 2-1 in favor of Sewanee. In the second half, Anne Booke (Charlotte, N.C., Charlotte Latin) and Caroline Carlin (Gladwyne, Penn., Country Day) added an insurance goal each to secure the 4-1 final tally in favor of Sewanee.
Sewanee outshot Transy 21-4 and took 14 penalty corners compared to three for the Pioneers. In goal, Sewanee's Emily Detmer (Denver, Colo., Pomfret) and newcomer Anna Morrow (Annapolis, Md., St. James) split time in the goal, with Detmer grabbing two saves. Alyssa Alfaro logged 14 saves for the Pioneers.
Sewanee (1-1) will host SCAC rival Centre in Sewanee at noon Sunday. The Tigers topped Centre 1-0 in the 2008 SCAC Championship final in the last meeting of the two squads.
